Charlie Sheen and Sean Penn Are Headed to Haiti

Charlie Sheen and Sean Penn Are Headed to Haiti

Of all the crazy ideas that Charlie Sheen has had lately, this might be the first good one. In an Access Hollywood interview on Friday, Sheen declared that he would be traveling to Haiti in the coming week with his buddy Sean Penn, in order to bring attention to the devastated nation.

"We’re going to do a couple things first and then it looks like we’re heading down [to Haiti]," Sheen told Billy Bush over the phone. "And I’m excited as hell because, you know, if I can bring the attention of the world down there, then clearly this tsunami keeps cresting."

The trip is happening at the suggestion of Penn, who founded his J/P Haitian Relief Organization in the immediate wake of Haiti's horrific January 2010 earthquake. Penn told Access that Sheen could be an asset to the people of the struggling country.

"I think his energies, intelligence and passion could be both of service and servicing to him, as it is to all who are touched by the struggle of the Haitian people," said Penn. "I would very much like to show my old friend the world of needs on the ground in Haiti, and introduce him and his tremendous wit to our hard working Haitian staff."

One might wonder how Sean Penn can see anything charitable in Charlie Sheen, after his week of narcissistic rants. Well, as far as Penn is concerned, Charlie is just keeping it real.

"Charlie is one of the very few public people who cannot be accused of using the media to his own benefit," says the Milk actor. "If he chooses to give support, I’ll trust it... When you divorce the moral judgments, which I prefer to do, I see a guy who has a clearer view of the nature of the world around him than is sometimes comfortable to have."

Yes, Penn believes that the self-proclaimed "rock star from Mars" and "Vatican assassin warlock" has a clearer view of the world than the rest of us. Whatever -- if Sean Penn can get Charlie Sheen to use his manic energy and "tiger blood" to help people in need, instead of having all-night drug parties and suing his friends, then Penn will have proved himself a true humanitarian.
